Blogger thoughts on building community

Blogger thoughts on building community Its been a big few weeks here at Brazen Careerist. First, Ive been accepted at 9Rules, a smart, very picky, community of serious bloggers, and Ive been invited to be part of the Washington Posts blog program as well. On top of that, blogs with very heavy traffic have been linking here, so average daily page views for December have jumped to about 4000. With all this attention has come an amazing community of people who comment on the blog and who email me directly. The conversation is a gift to me a bunch of very interesting people who are willing to talk about topics Im interested in. The community is what makes blogging fun. People told me that at the beginning of my life as a blogger, but I didnt get it until a few months later. Hosting a conversation is tricky. Ive been writing a column for seven years. People who have been reading for the whole time have put up with a lot of repetition as I revisit and revisit my pet topics. And when I see a bunch of new readers, I think, the conversation will be better if I get everyone up to speed on these issues. Its a fine line, though. Sarah Davis pointed out that Im repeating myself. Its true. In the post shes referring to I link five or six times to other posts of mine. I think, though, that sometimes to grow with a topic you have to revisit the topic, and look at a slightly different angle. Its a fine line between that and sounding like a scratched record. I am working on finding the right side of that line. Meanwhile, I like that Sarah is sticking with me and reading critically while Im figuring out when to revisit a topic within a fast-growing community. I hope there are lots of people like her out there.

Job Hunting Got You Down

Job Hunting Got You Down 5 Flares 5 Flares Are you a suited, booted, Don Draper-alike with the chiseled jawline of Superman and the business acumen of Donald Trump? Or do you sit in your pants regularly, emailing thousands of resumes and barely receiving even a polite rejection? Chances are you’re the latter, and you’re in the same boat as thousands of others. The boat in question is called the HMS Jobseeker and, for many unfortunate people, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find safe port and disembark. In December 2014, the US contained 8.7 million jobless. That’s 8.7 million people consigned to a lifetime of dreary daytime telly, budget meals with the nutritional worth of cardboard and a constant stream of unpaid bills. It’s a terrifying set of circumstances to find yourself â€" but it’s not the time to give up. Instead, it’s up to you to redouble your efforts and make the employment world take notice of your CV. But how? Show them you mean business For a start, a degree in your chosen field can help you edge forward in your chosen career path. And it doesn’t even have to be within a specific vocation. If you’ve got the thirst for business, for example, then a catch-all degree like a master in business administration could give you a solid grounding you can build on as a foundation for your career. The media has been vicious towards college education in recent times, bemoaning high tuition fees and poor prospects. However, there’s no questioning the inherent value of education, and a highly paid job will offset any debts you might accrue. All the right friends You might have seen them at parties â€" the type of people with more panache than a walking Versace collection. They breeze up to multimillionaires and nab a top job with a glimmer of their eyes and a joke about their new boss’s wife. Most of the time they don’t even walk â€" they glide. A bit of vanity has never hurt a job hunter. After all, finding a good position is a grift â€" and the truly skilled grifters always have style. Head to networking events, donning your finest interview garb, and make the most of your time to meet the right people and impress them with your confident attitude. You’ll soon be receiving emails from your new contacts telling you where positions are freeing up. Game the net The internet is hardly new but a surprising number of people still don’t harness it for their job hunt. Set up a LinkedIn account (the premier business networking site) and big yourself up on your profile. Connect with the right people and you’ll find your job prospects will improve immensely. Soon, you might even be consigning your daytime telly marathons to the past.

Liven Up Your Job Hunt - Tips for When Things Look Bleak -

Liven Up Your Job Hunt - Tips for When Things Look Bleak - Photo by coral11 Yesterday, I wrote about some unfortunate job hunting misteps that characterized desperate job seekers. Since its never a good idea to tell people what NOT to do without following up with some helpful suggestions, todays blog offers some things to consider if you are really getting tired of looking for a job. If your job hunt makes you feel like Ms. Allie (pictured above), read on for tips to get a jump start: Click here for some suggestions to get you started. I also thought youd like to consider these additional suggestions from Penelope Trunk for when you think all is lost and you feel like crawling back into bed and watching reruns instead of looking for work. (Summaries are my own): Check your attitude. If you let yourself wallow in the down and out, youll hurt your chances to find a job. The power of positive thinking is real. Penelope suggests actually writing a list of things that are going well in your life and a list of your positive personality traits. Check your focus. Rethink your resume and the type of job you are applying to get. Maybe you need to readjust your focus for success. Penelope always recommends hiring a professional to write your resume. I agree ?? I wouldnt suggest waiting until you are desperate, though. Check your pace. Focus your networking efforts and set attainable (push yourself a little) goals. Meet people you DONT think will be able to help you. Youll be surprised. Check your personal life. Dont forget to see your friends. Have a life. Dont spend all your time networking externally at the expense of your honest-to-goodness support system. Avoid spending time with negative people. Check your spending. Be mindful of your expenses. Dont deny yourself, but do you really need that new (insert frivilous item that in no way assists with your search)? Purchase what youll need to conduct a successful search clothing, shoes, a nice haircut, professional career adviceKeep your other spending to a minimum so you wont run out of money! Turn off the TV and read. You never know where youll find inspiration! Read fun things and books that make you think. Personally, I love going to the bookstore to find all the new books and then going to the library to check them out! Keppie Careers will help you with your search. Need a great resume? Cover letter? Dont know how to network?
